The Pushkin Trust
For the past 30 years the Pushkin Trust has been encouraging children and teachers in schools all over Ireland to find their ‘voice’ and discover their imagination and inspiration through meaningful integration. At the core of the Pushkin Trust’s work is the Schools’ Programme which is a cross-curricular, cross-community and cross-border project involving primary, secondary, Irish medium and special needs schools across the island of Ireland.
The Pushkin Trust is synonymous with creativity, inspiration and expression of the voice. Inspired by her ancestor the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, Sacha the Duchess of Abercorn (1946-2018) planted the seed of the Pushkin Trust aiming to ‘unite children and adults in the common bond of creativity which transcends all the factors which otherwise might divide them’. For over 30 years, that seed of an idea has sprouted, grown and blossomed into a large Pushkin tree. What began as a creative writing project has branched out to encompass other art forms – music, dance, sculpture and the visual arts. Exploration of the environment is an important source of inspiration in the Pushkin Trust programme.
The organisation has grown into an all-Ireland educational programme for the creative and personal growth of the individual, promoting a connected curriculum with an emphasis on creativity and imagination while also developing knowledge, skills and understanding.
The overarching theme of the programme in the school year 2022-2023 was ‘Reforestation of the Imagination’ and the pupils in 5th and 6th Class in our school worked collaboratively and cooperatively to explore this theme using an integrated and thematic approach to learning. Participating in the project was an extremely worthwhile endeavour for our pupils and high levels of engagement, imagination and creativity really came to the fore in their learning. We are very grateful to have been given the opportunity to participate in and engage with the Pushkin Trust programme for the first time in 2022-2023 and we were very pleased to be awarded a Pushkin Trust award in recognition of our efforts.
